Article Processing Charges (APC)
This guide explains what APCs cover, when they apply, how discounts and waivers work, and where to find journal-specific APC information across the platform.
General information
APCs are one-time publication charges applied to accepted articles where a journal uses a funded open-access model. There are no charges for rejected submissions unless a separately disclosed service explicitly states otherwise.
What APCs cover
Editorial administration
Submission intake, workflow management, reviewer coordination, and editorial support.
Production
Copyediting, typesetting, metadata preparation, DOI handling, and publication formatting.
Distribution and preservation
Indexing support, hosting, and long-term archiving of the published record.
Operational support
Author and reviewer assistance, platform maintenance, and service continuity.
Journal development
Ongoing management, improvement, and visibility support for journals and collections.
Compliance infrastructure
Standards support, integrity screening, and scholarly record maintenance.
Discounts and waivers
Where journal policy allows, fee waivers may be considered for authors with demonstrated financial need. Waiver decisions are made independently of editorial outcomes and do not affect the review process. Authors may contact the editorial office after acceptance to inquire about waiver availability for their journal.
Currencies and payments
Accepted currencies and payment methods may vary by platform configuration and enabled gateways. Where supported, payment instructions are issued after acceptance and should be followed using official channels only.
